From strength to strength, Dangerbox is proud to present another fabulous EP courtesy of one of our founders. Douglas Hazelwood is up just in time to celebrate the peak of the season. Just as busy as his partner Artificial Dreamer and equally as talented, Douglas Hazelwood brings us his People Say EP. This release is composed of a duo of sensational tunes. They Always Say features astounding vocals from Di, who’s voice is just as heart wrenching and captivating as the instrumental which accompanies it. The tune has a nice bouncy bass with Di’s haunting voice flowing smoothly in and out. They Never say is the perfect summer tune for you prog lovers out there! The piano from this song has been stuck in all our heads at the Dangerbox headquarters for weeks on end. Now its your turn to catch this melodic influenza!

Douglas Hazelwood is an American producer, and it seems, one of the guys in charge of Dangerbox Recordings (The other guy, it would seem, is the Artificial Dreamer, Jimmy Bastista). Now, I’m not familiar with Doug’s work (As himself, and as Arc, alongside Jimmy), but I’ve heard good things. This EP features Di on the vocals, so you get some vocals, you get some dubs, and most importantly, you get some quality (Hopefully!). Read on!

They Always Say feat. Di (Original Mix) -
We start out with a standard fare beat of kick and hat, spiked with the occasional glitch and plucky stab. A break drops the kick, brings in the vocals, and off we go, bassline in hand. A squeaky synth plays out to give off a very playful vibe, which is complimented by the very chuggy bassline. As for the vocals, they are laden with delay, filtered, chopped, and all that good stuff…It makes for a casual and deep atmosphere. Master Hazelwood keeps it casual, but maintains energy by omitting any lengthy breaks. I am thinking this was the smart choice, since there are not a ton of things happening. Not too shabby!

They Never Say (Original Mix) -
From the start you can tell that this is very similar in style and progression. The same chords are plinked out on piano (With some tasteful reverse), accompanied by a minute arp. After the first break, a meaner bassline makes an appearance. Despite the slower approach, there is plenty of bite here. The first break lets the piano breathe and elaborate, in all of its reversed goodness. A warm lead makes an appearance to electronic it up and eventually take the stage, as that beefy bassline returns to have at it. We are pretty much taken out by that bassline and piano, having one last energetic clap-infused moment as we head out.

They Never Say (Slow Mix) -
This would be a slowed down chillout version, with darker piano chords, softer synth, that reverse, and big bass drum slams. It’s a short track, weighing in at three minutes, but that’s all you need to wind down.

Just a carefree joyride! It’s hard to choose, because they really are all different, despite what the names say. I’m gonna go with They Never Say, because I love that bassline. Cheers! 8/10.”
